Brief hits of excitement, mostly droll existence,,,
LOL Stop teasin’ us Dio
Alright, I hit the ‘excitement’ part first.
Bossman picked up a pup at the pound recently 6 months old or so, German Shepard build, all white fur w/brown eyes. I know there is a breed that fits that, but I can’t recall the name. Anybuggerss,,, Said dawg was on the loose this AM when we were prepping for work. Usually pretty good about staying inside the fence so none of us thought a thing about it.
Till we heard brakes on the highway and suddenly seeing stalled traffic up there. Son of Bossman jumps in the Kia to go up an check things out. Sho’nuff,,, theres said pup, scared shitless, but unharmed. He captures our truant and returns to shop.
Well, the excitement and confusion got the better part of puppers Flight or Fight response and when Son of went to pull the pupper out the car, Immeditate FIGHT scenario escalated. Son of Bossman has SEVERAL deep puncture wounds on his arm and hands. I heard the kerfluflle and ran to see if I could help, Jumped in (Son of had Dawgum pinned to ground but in a way he couldn’t do much else.) and grabbed up as much scruff as I could, got a little nip from small teefers, not the big canines in the process. Told Son of “I got him” so he could extract from things, and I could get dawgum off his feet, airborne, held by two double handfulls of scruff and cart his wayward scared and VIOLENT butt to the kennel. Burnout was there waiting at the kennel door and I tossed dawgum in HARD so he couldn’t get his feet under him fast and back in my face. And we slammed that kennel shut.
Least to say, Said pupper wore out his welcome with the Bosses. They haven’t returned him to the Shelter, YET, but I can see it coming. Fact is, This Dawgum is just way to high in energy for Bossman. The boy needs to runrunrunrun, and he hasn’t been getting enough of that. It came out in scared anger today. No one is mad at him: even Son of Bossman, who took the brunt of the attack was cool about it, after his adrenals had settled down. I know he was saying he was gonna see a Doc, and truly NEEDS to if he hasn’t (sooner is best, especially with puncture wounds. note: if you don’t have fast access to a doc in the event of dog bites FLUSH THE WOUNDS REPEATEDLY, Saline solutions work wonders. But do find some way of getting that solution in deep: a syringe with a long nipple or blunt needle works well. DO NOT bind the wound to closure, you need it to be able to express any fluid build up. and DO get you to a doc as soon as is possible. There are antibiotics you are going to need to keep the grimies from getting a hold inside you.)
And the rest of the day was a huge nothing burger and I’m quite happy for it. We deliverd those two, two-peice gates I made to be assembled on site. I assembled/welded one and we got it wired up and in position, but the day had grown short for me to carry over to the other. I’ll be back for it at some point soon. But thats about it for what my world was like.

Dammit man! Bossman does a goodie, and it turns out shitty. Bummer! Glad Son Of weren’t tore up too bad, but yer dam right he needs to see a Doc fer those punctures – ASAP. Bad news if’n them nasties get a grip. Shame the pupper is gonna hafta go back, but it appears there’s really no other way, as high strung as he is.
After alla that, itz good that the rest o’ the day wuz purty dull! Sometimes, ain’t nuthin wrong with dull.

Yup.. its the things ya can’t see that get ya in trouble. Food particles from doggie teeth, the microbes on your skin suddenly getting deep sixed into flesh, Skin particles (dead cells) suddenly imbedded several layers below normal. ALL of these can cause a multitude of infections. The Saline flushes will get most of ’em, and neutralize some others, but honestly a good debriding (OUCH!) is in order along with those flushes. Leaving things open so they can ooze will allow the immune system to do its job as it should. Dam the opening and you risk blood borne infections.
Listen to me. I’m no Doc, not even a Nurse, so take my rambles with a grain of sodium chloride and ionized Iodine.
absolutely DULL can be ‘what the doctor ordered’ and I needed the duldrums of feild work today. I let the crews do their thing and I did mine with only one assist (Can’t lift 1000# by meself, at least not the way that was needed.)

Maybe take the pup to a training class. But ya gotta work the dog twice a day, about fifteen minutes per session. It’s worth it when you’re done. a trained dog is a sight to behold. I’ve had German shepherds my whole life. Got almost a dozen buried here. The white is a recessive gene in German Shepherds.
Dogs are pack animals and they’ve got the mind of a five year old. Maybe five and a half if you’ve got a smart one. But if someone commits to training him and handling him he’s probably salvageable. The worst punishment for a dog is a time out. Being on time out really hurts the pack instinct. Hits them harder than a beating does… But the other side of that coin is that whoever trains them and works them gets incredible loyalty.
My dad had to lock the dog up when it was time to spank me cause I took the dog EVERYWHERE but school. Bicycle ride? He was right there with me. Fishing? Right on the pond bank with me. Spanking time for Fred? He wasn’t having it! He got locked up till the razor strap got hung up. Cause Dad wasn’t having it either…
Anyway, check out local pet stores for training classes. A lot of them do the training right in the store. It gets them socialized too.

I agree with everything you are saying, but this is beyond my call. I personally think the way the dogs, even the cats, around the shop are treated, is at best ‘casually’ and if they develop a problem, healthwise, they either get better or die. If they become a problem, as in discipline issue, they are usually put down via lead poisoning.
And the mindset is prevelant around here. People discard dogs and pups and kats when they don’t wanna deal with them anymore (thats how we ended up with Bear-bear and Rufus,, Drop-offs) its how I ended up with Cozz.
I can tell you right now, there will be no chance in hell of training classes for any of the dogs. Too much ‘personal time and money’ involved for ‘mere dawg’,,,,

I’ve seen that attitude before… I hope there’s a special place in hell for people that dump pets! I think it would be easier to shoot a human than a cat or dog. I’ve had to shoot four dogs in my life. Two of mine and two for other people. I won’t do it for someone else again! It gets harder every time. My current dog is getting along good with the vet so maybe I won’t have to go through it again. Cookie will be my last dog, I don’t want a dog of mine to outlive me. No telling what my kinfolk would do… Anyway, maybe the pup will luck out better with his next pack.

There are no bad dogs, just bad-ignorant-lazy owners.
My last mutt was a female Aussie-Brittany and I learned early on what it was all about. I took her on and there was no way I could take her back, so I adapted. We had part of our large yard fenced in so she had her own space to run.
She was with me directly from 6am to 11pm everyday and became a dependable friend like none before. Her senses became extensions of my own. She died last Sept at age 11 and I still miss her terribly.
