But before y’all skip past, its not about being stuck at home. This’uns about doom-n-gloom system paralysis.
Huh? Just what the hell is that Dio?
Its the paralysis some types seemingly fall to everytime they get hit sideways with potential change. They see all the modern marvels we have and think if just one leg fails, the whole she-bang goes teats up.
We stand on the shoulders of giants. Never forget that. At one point, we had pointy sticks and happenstance fires. We didn’t know how to make the fire even though we could feed it and keep it alive, and we hadn’t hit the rocks together enough to figure out “these can be made into things”.
Granted, there are more than a few in this world that will drop dead if the power were to stop flowing for more than 72 hours. Some from medical issues that require refrigeration of supplies, or dialysis, etc. And there are some that will simply dehydrate or starve because ‘shit stopped flowing’. And a handful will self-emolate because the stress will do them in.
I’m not talking about those people.
I’m talking about those that ‘role-play’ “What if???” And then make efforts to fill in the blanks. People like me. I’m no doctor, and my medical experiance is about combat first aid level, bordering towards EMT without quite hitting target. One of those suffering DnGSP mentioned that if shit gets real heavy, real medical help is gonna hit CW1 levels like RTFN. No anesthesia. Bone saws and spurting arteries, and throw in the septic conditions to boot.
Um, NO. It may not be your local ER with top notch equipment tools and chemistry, but it wont be leeches and bloodletting either.
Wanna know a quick way to help a surgeon out in the heat of the moment? Sulphuric acid and Ethanol. No, ya aint gonna get the patient drunk and passed out. You drip the ethanol into the acid and collect the resulting fumes into a respirator. Its ETHER, the FIRST anesthesia. A cold water bath around the vessel holding the acid keeps things from going all boomy, and using a closed system (into the patient) keeps the fumes from creating a bad situation for all. NOX is almost as easy. (For information purposes only: I take no credit or liablity if you attempt this method. Research details on your own.)
Keeping things cleaned is common sense now where in 1860, the docs that cleaned their tools were thought strange. Just keeping scalding hot water nearby to rinse tools off will do more than most ‘hospitals’ of 1860 did. Sterilization of tools and linens under high pressure steam would be simple.
Antibiotics may be a bottle neck, if not “prepped” before hand. I’ll give the DnGSP victim that one. But thats like saying every day hospitals have some way of making antibiotics on site, which they do not. Simple pre-planning/preparation is in order there. Prepping things like bandages, sutures, long term analgesics, etc etc should be taking place now. Learning things like the ether trick above, learn them now. (And do you know how to make sulphuric acid, or distill ethanol? Both have far more uses than just knocking out a patient so a surgeon can do their thing. Might wanna get cracking on that information gap.)
The biggest issue with DnGSP is being stuck so far into the system, you can’t see “any other way”. Its like being a Leftist that can’t see error in their system and anyone trying to illustrate such is a ‘hater’ or ‘racist’ or ‘nazi’.
Roll play these things in your head. Run through the variables needed and randomly remove one of the modern parts: see what can be done as a work-around/replacement. It may mean scrapping the whole thing and starting from scratch, but better to see that now, when its a leisurely exercise, not SHTFF time.
