Techy issues resolving (and a PSA)

getting the phone in order, lost quite a bit from my last backup to now.   Mostly messages and pictures.  Lots of work related pics gone forever.  A lot of the personal pics were posted here, so I still have those, in a sense. 

BUT

I ran into something that I want to warn others about.   

Find my phone.    Google offers this service for free, and it does work, IF, and only IF, the phone is ON,,,

I know that now.

I wasn’t happy with the non-answer Giggles offered up, so I did a search for that Find my phone App and found several online versions.

Its a scam.   The original ‘billing’ was for $1.80 total.    Today, my bank declined TWO hits for $49.95 that ran 2 seconds apart in time, from the very same ‘vendor’ as the small transaction.

And to boot, the ‘Find my phone’ told me my phone was in New Yuck Shitty.   Yeah I believe that.    They got my payment info, and ran an imaging program to make it look like they actually did something.   Then wait 24 hours to run the scam side.    I’ve contacted the bank about it, to shut down the whole Short transaction and to inform them of another online fraud scheme.  

Thats the PSA side of techy fun-n-games.   Then theres the Da side of it.   Email today (his emails that go to my phone since he hasn’t a way to check, but has to have email for so many things, like Doctors.)   This one for the ISP here local.  Complaining the email they have for him is “nomail@yahoo” and they can’t contact him.   “Well, you managed to get through to THIS email, whats the problem?”   So I follow the link and get sent to a ‘set up account’ page, and its a legit page from the ISP servers,

BUT,,,

They want to send two part verification to that VERY email they are saying is the problem, AND, if not that, to his phone as an SMS message.  Only, we did away with that phone over a week ago, and they don’t offer a way to correct the information without using those two points of contact.  

I’ll be making a phone call to a flesh and blood technician tomorrow, only available during business hours.  I have all of his personal info, and a Durable Power of Attorney in my paws  Do Not Fuck With Me!!!

there is good reason I chose to NOT pursue IT as a career. Only took one year for me to figure out that the headaches just aren’t worth it, and that I have enough headaches with my own crap, why would I want to handle everyone elses?    I know there is good reason for IT techs existence and I respect those that do go that route.  I am not one of them.  

Give me a greasy wrench and DVOM with good leads any day.   Those machines, I “get”.

Does that make my a simpleton?  Oh to the hell NO!  There is mechanics involved, not so much logic, as in computers.   Mechanical monstrosities don’t operate on logic; they operate on Physics and sometimes those things do things that don’t require a lick of LOGIC.   They do require a sense of systems, and several at once.

But y’all know that already, doncha?  LOL   Preachin’ to the choir.

Lord knows, I have had several vehicles that LOGIC had nothing to do with: they were more like a well trained Labrador with an attitude.   One was even a blood thirsty belladonna that refused to run unless I had bled profusely during the repair.  They definitely develop character after a few years on the road, hanging out with people.

But that leads me to thinking, maybe I wanna scale back the Tech,,,   Hard to do in this day and age with 24/7 connectivity.  But thats part o the problem too.   I grew up in a world where the phones were chained in place, to walls and such.  Even the desktop ‘wireless’ types were limited in range.   When I left the house, I was FREE.  If  I needed to call, payphones or ask at the house I was visiting.  

I sorta miss that,,,

So, how does one go about ‘cutting the cord’ to this techy world?   Limit phone/access to specific times?   What about business needs: does one only carry the phone during business hours?   (seems like thats becoming the thing again, with limited AI/Bots to take up the slack in off hours (usually quite badly too.))

I dunno, half assed questions with in- adequate answers.   Maybe at some point, after I eliminate the debts, I can further remove myself from the Techy world and go Quasi-Amish.    I wouldn’t hold my breath on that happening, but the temptaion is there.

Thread shift: Has anyone else felt that this has been one of the WETTEST summers in a quite awhile?    Its rained here, every-day, at least once for an hour or more, usually more, since late May.   Usually July tends to be quite dry, just hotter than F!   This one has been Hotter than F! with the added insult of stupendous Humidity between showers.

Its been wet enough that there are things Need done, that are on hold till the ground doesn’t go “Squish!”.   I could do them, but would be adding in vehicle recovery to my list of things.  And those would take priority: need done NOW!

is wut t’is.   Can’t change the weather, but its gonna change on ya.

Thats about all I have for a Humpday.  Not mucha nuthin’ I care to cover outside of my little world.
