repacked up a day bag for Lyssa. Now that the weather is turning around, and as we head into November, weather can turn in minutes: I pack accordingly. Small shelter set up; a tarp and hammock thing I have had for years but works anywhere you can get two trees that are friendly. Medium weight sleeping bag, Woobie, small stove and three ways to start fire (must get warms if you get chilled, and fires can also be good for signalling if things REALLY go sideways. I don’t see that so much on small inland lakes, but getting warm is a must.) Water Filtration, instant soups (carbs and heat inside to fight chill) and I will add snacks and more substantial stuff tomorrow for the day. I never pack up ‘real’ food for more than a weekend trip (since I have never gone more than a day anyways, YET,,,,) and I eat what I take so it doesn’t ‘turn’ on me.
Tomorrow is calling for mid sixties, winds out of SW around 10 (early low of 4 building into afternoon when the rain chances climb closer to unity) and those sound like DEE-VINE paddling conditions to this crazzy greybeard. Not too cold, just enough pissing chance to keep all but the hardcore boaters at bay (and they tend to more sober,,,,) and I actually LIKE paddling in the rain,,, Has compass for when it gets really heavy, and you get more than enough chance to point the boat in the way you want to go before the shores disappear behind the raindrops.
SO, I have a good paddle day arranged, my ‘oh-shit’ bag packed, ready to load in the compartment. and a full night of boredom between here and there.
yup, ready and rarin’ to go.
stopped by the river this afternoon, different place, same conditions,,, sluggish flows due to low levels. Was hoping to get Rio on some current, still hoping, but not here, not yet. Funny how that works; you find the boat you have been looking for, but the conditions for the ‘Get to know each other’ float are months off. *sigh*,,,,
It might be a virgin run on the Pigeon when we get that chance. At least I know the river better now. I can still take her to the lake for rolling practice, but she really doesn’t dig on that sedentary water under her hull. No keel to speak of, rockered heavily. punchy bow and stern: she isn’t fast on flat stuff, she gets to hull speed and turns on her self. side rudders, don’t rudder, they draw, and stern ruddering is even stranger in reaction: you don’t change direction, only attitude in travel, sideslipping. I need that current under her to get a feel for what those actions do when things are moving. (that side draw, if it stays true in current, will be a HUGE advantage in rock avoidance. )
But tomorrow is Lyssa’s day,,, My get some miles in day, get away from the world day, and gather up the still sane braincells and console them for the abuse they have been taking day.
