Big job, state backed/funded infrastructure type job, so my peepers were looking for stinky stuff because, well, Guv-ment, right?
Some pointed questions, some observation and what we are dealing with is a graduate Engineer up high and a stickler busybody down low and the crew has been getting the usual BOHICA. Had to pull 16 posts set Tuesday and 8 of the holes dug yesterday were dug out to install a drain line that ‘no one knew was supposed to go through there’. (Quick peek at the plans says stickler Screwed the Pooch and had to save face,,,)
So, bossman told Stickler, you want it to spec when what we do works better, YOU DIRECT THE CREW AND SIGN OFF ON EVERY FLIPPIN POST!
Poor SOB was drenched in sweat by 2pm, looked downright miserable and I am betting another worker $5, dood doesn’t even show his mug on the site tomorrow. He’s my age, maybe younger, and has been pushing a desk since his degree was stamped: general laborer he ain’t!!! LOL. Hell, I’m the welder/goto guy/McGuyver of the crew, and I was doing the “easy job” of running the Concrete mixer. Shoveled over 3 tons of gravel and 4-94#bags of Portland cement, and with two chumps pushing barrows, my ‘breaks’ were while I was running water into the mixer for the next batch. Stickler only had to run a measuring tape and eyeballs.
I love it when someone of the other side of the desk gets to find out the reason they chose the desk.
Don’t get me wrong, I pushed a desk for a few years. I ‘ran a desk’ as an sound guy, both Front of house and monitors. I have held management positions on several occasions, and had a few times where I was the production manager while on tour. I know the ‘job’ isn’t as easy-peasy as it looks. Lots more thinking, planning, budgets, etcetera. (Quick note: if my resume were ever posted, I am so over-qualified for my current position, people would break their necks with the “dafuq?!?!” twist. )
No, I don’t pity, nor envy Stickler. But he is quickly learning that you do not fuck with the guys that make the gears turn.
