Welcome to my brain. It’s messy. It’s interesting. And it’s all connected if you stick around long enough. "Believe Nothing: no matter who said it, even if I have said it, except it agree with your own reason and common sense. Siddhartha Guatamo, the Buddha.

A musical interlude to Dio’s life

Probably a little out there for most of ya,,,

Try this’un, ( great band outta Cincy, many a fun show with a bunch of great talent that doesn’t take themselves TOO seriously)

Alright, y’all want something a little more maintstream,,,,   Gotcha, sorta,

and one of my all time faves, horns, slap bass, geeky songwriter and fantabulous sessions arranger,,,,

And that last ABSOLUTELY sums up my ‘issues’.   I know what I want, kinda sorta, and am working on the details.   Just saying I want to be happy is like walking into a closet to see the scenery outside,,,,

(and a side note, watching that last vid always brings back longing to be at the FOH console,,,   I lived for the days I was able to mix bands like Joe Jackson (never did but would have had the time of my life if so), Average White band (three times!!!!   Love those guys,,,) or Original P (Parliament Funkadelic without the big guy,,,  Mixed them at Derby Fest in 2006, right on the Ohio River next to Joes CrabShack, and had EVERY input on my desk lit up when they opened the show with Flashlight.  That Moog tore up the riverfront that night.).

And another band that I mixed,,, with a little story behind it,,,,

Amy, last GF/Life partner, knew I had a thing for this band and when she heard they were playing the BlueNote near our place, bought tickets for us to go see.

We walk into the Note, and there at the FOH desk (big ol’ Yamaha desk,,,I prefer the Brit desks with Log pots, not the linear pots on Yammies.) was an old friend, Goat (never did know his real name, but a well earned name for him.  Cast Iron stomach, could eat ANYTHING, and not retch, and climbed truss like a mountain goat.) who immediately snagged my arm telling me “I got a problem dood”

Seems the bands Sound guy had just about enough of TOO MUCH on the bands tab and was out at the tour bus puking his guts up.  BAND is pissed, but what can you do?   Goat is no sound guy, great systems tech, but no sound guy and the company was told they only needed a tech.

Amy was NOT happy.   BUT, The BAND did pay her back for the tickets and put us on the tab for the night.   When they did the above song,,,   I hit a nirvana in my life: The mix was perfect and the main artist (who is the drummer believe it or not) was so into it, he did something he is reputed to do only when he is ‘In the spirit’, chucked the sticks and did that entire song and solo with bare hands.   I must have floated on a cloud for WEEKS after that, and Amy never did forgive me for ruining HER night out to me.   But she could never understand that she DID give me the night out of a lifetime, and that can never be replaced.  If she had never bought those tickets, we wouldn’t have gone (I love live music, but only when I am behind the desk, its a foible of mine) and I would never have mixed the band (one of) that got me through an awkward teen-hood.

No matter what the future brings, I HAVE had a great life, just wanna keep the stone rolling. May not be able to mix these days (gotta be able to hear and that’s a problem now.), but I do know how to enjoy living: just gotta get back into it.

  1. Dude! Great post! I’d completely forgotten about Ned’s… Great band that kinda got lost in the heyday of the “Madchester” scene and the blowup of Jesus Jones, EMF, etc. The UK was kicking ass musically in the 90’s! And Joe Jackson, one of my favorite artists of all time. “Look Sharp!” is one of my Desert Island Disc’s and Graham Maby is STILL in my top3 bassists list! And finally, SHOOTING STAR! Another long forgotten band for me that I LOVED as a kid. When that record came out my buddy and I spent countless sessions trying to learn that drum break! They sounded like the bastard child of Triumph and Kansas, just freakin’ epic! That song just flooded me with great memories this morning, thank you!! Rock on Dio!! And believe in yourself!!!

    • Ya may have noticed a certain theme with all those vids,,, just sayin,,,
Graham Maby was and is one of my top three bassists, and so underknown unless ya play the thick strings or beat on goatskins.
