off the cuff
I keep having these dystopian thinks runnin’ rampant in my head,,, the one today relates to that picture of the elk I ‘shot’ this morning. Shot as in shooting a picture, but they were right there and had I the gumption,,, First off, no need, and them being on the hoof means I don’t need to come up with ways of storing several hundred pounds of meat(and the rest of the mess like hide, legbones, other key peices). Second off, thats called poaching in the current ways and means, and while I won’t say I won’t be willing to be a poacher, right now,,, Again, no need,,, Third off, I do NOT trophy hunt: I do get why some do, but those that do ONLY for the trophy kinda piss me off.
About that pic, the Bull was likely around 1000#, the four cows were likely around 600-700#. And there were more than those 5. I saw three other bulls and didn’t get a count on the number of cows as those groups headed into the brush much faster than the five I ‘shot’. And let me tell you, a 1000# hoofed animal can flat disappear in the brush and do it so silently,,, Freaky, (and I used to have a picture of a full sized buck, standing 15′ away from me, and unless you KNEW he was there, you would never have seen him. Dunno how many people saw that pic and never saw the deer: they would comment on how pretty the tree was or how gloomy the whole scene looked.)
anywhaysss,,,, What got my dystopian thinks going was that most people have zero clue how our diets work. And what I have learned over the years, (fair warning, I am no dietician, never trained as one, and I did NOT stay at holiday inn last night,,,) is that what we were taught is so much bull-crap. Lots of protein in my diet and I maintain my drop dead gorgeous physique (;-P) with little trouble. Fats, as in oils and straight up FAT, like you get on a good cut of beef or porkchop, not only taste good but are what your body wants over that veggie oil spread that looks and kinda tastes like butter. Butter, like churned from the stuff that you get from a COW: your body CRAVES that stuff, and for a damned good reason: said body KNOWS how to use it.
As with all things, moderation is in order since you can (and likely will sooner than later) overdo a good thing.
Remember when EGGS were bad for you, then they were good for you again, and suddenly they were “ok” but be careful,,, Yeah, that’s the kind of BS that I am talking about. Moderation, but not neglect. Same thing goes with Alcohol, a little here and there, does a body good, drinking to annihilation every weekend, prolly not-so-much,,,
What really sold me on the “the Diet Experts from on high are Idjits!!” (the ones that keep fucking with the school menus are the target of my vitiriol here) was when I first started the Paleo thing. Low carbs, like next to none, TONS of protien. Everything processed? Buh-BYE,,, (my failure was my alcohol, and sugars,,, I like a bit of sweet in my java to kick start my day)
BUT, I tried it, and found out something. I felt ALIVE. Had more energy, slept less but felt ten times better after a good sleep, Mr Arth-er wasn’t visiting me nearly as much, if at all, and when I went paddling, I was faster for longer and recoveries took less time.
I have slid on the Paleo diet, but most of that comes down to finances and living arrangements. I can’t afford to buy meat everyday, and I don’t have the storage means to put aside a couple hundred pounds of it,,, (yet) and I would have to take a week off to make that much jerky, and that much jerky prolly isn’t all that good for you either (that moderation thing again.). And jerky can get old like anything when you have been gnawing on it non-stop for several weeks/months,,,, Just sayin’,,,
But I do limit my carbs as often as possible.
and here we go into festivus season where EVERYTHING is carb laden, saturated in all the things that get your salivary glands flowing,,,
And its looking like a lean season is forthcoming immediately on the tail of that,,, Along with a stoopendoulsy cold winter,,,
All leading to more dystopian thinks,,,,
and I see that daggum elk herd at least once a week. I see a troupe of Doe in my woods every other day. I see the vegetation that is dormant but still available and come spring will take off like mad. I see tons of mast in the woods, (we had a HELLA Acorn harvest this year,,, The deer are going to get FAT this winter,,,).(and why I know that this winter is going to last longer, mama nature provides for her children that know how to look,,,, Those acorns were thicker than usual because the winter is going to be longer. Tell me I’m wrong, or full of shit,, but I’m telling you, the acorns never lie.)
So what the moral of todays thinks?
Preps are not just what you store in your pantry, or gun safe. They are the things you catalog in the world that you may need (or need to do away with) when ‘that time’ comes. What are you cataloging for your preps? (mine should be obvious,,)

Today’s thinks, huh? Dam if’n ya didn’t start me a-thinkin’ again – sometimes that’s expensive. Wish we had some of those critters here in C. FLA.! I’ve seen ’em up fairly close (numerous states to the North, and numerous times), but just cain’t seem to find ’em here at home!😉 Don’t know where they’re a-hidin – probly bout 1k miles (maybe less) north of here would be a good guess!😜 Worked in 45 of the lower 48 – at least once, many more than once – and have seen a slew of critters that don’t seem to have made their way this far South. Bummer.
Been considerin’ that Paleo diet meself, but danged if I can decide to give it a try or not. Gonna hafta do more research I suppose.
Y’all take care,
Mike.
