Parts didn’t arrive today. Still showing in transit in NC,,, Monday,,, USPS, of course,,,,


One with drum, one without. the one without was the passenger side.
I knew I was in a fight when I pulled the wheel and saw factory retaining clips,,, on a 25 year old Truck,,,, But surprisingly, the Passenger side popped loose after about 5000 hits with the hammer. Ok, mehbe 500,,, And as you can see if you embiggen the pic, those shoes look GOOD,,, Fact, no seeming wear or much of anything on that side. I did note that I will need to replace the p-brake cable on that side, as its liner is degraded and showing rust, but amazingly, it still ‘moves’ inside the sheath.
THEN, Drivers side. Upgraded to a 3# ‘drilling’ hammer,,, The drum IS loose on the spindle. I accessed the adjuster sleeve, and even an inspection port. I can see that the shoes are locked tight to the drum, The drum is loose, I can put a prybar between it and the backing plate and see it wiggle. BUT,
It! Ain’t! Movin’!
Tried every trick (but one ) so far to get ‘stuck drums’ loose. Tried loosening that adjuster, but its wedged so tight, those little teeth just break right off without moving. I know the Pbrake cable is good, and using that is what adjusts the brake shoes,,, and apparently, someone was PUMPING that peddle at some point. Things are JAMMED UP tight. I have one more trick up my sleeve,,, Cut the retaining pins to the hold down springs. I can access them on the backing plate and Cut that little head off with a die-grinder. Use a prybar to pull them ‘proud’ and WHACK!!! with a pair of side cutters or die grinder, Things will move then, and maybe enough that I can get it clear without more death and destruction. Besides, A brake hardware kit is CHEAP compared to all the other stuff in there.
Looking in that inspection port, the shoes look to be about the same thickness as the passenger side. I would say the origninal owner is a former truck driver and did LOTS of compression braking using the engine, with a very light braking foot. I know when I was driving a stick, my brakes tended to last double or triple that, compared to when I drive a slushbox, because thats the way I was taught to drive a stick: use the engine, save the brakes for emergencies. Just blows my mind: A 25 year old truck with factory original brakes with 195K on the clock And they look GOOD!!! No corrosion on the hardware, shiney adjuster (after you hose off the brake dust) and can still see the color coding of the springs.
But I’m whooped: swinging that hammer, prying with crowbars, prybars. Wiggling under the truck to access the adjuster ports and inspection ports,,,
And breaking up a dog fight,,,,

Yeah,,, some pillhead came wandering through the hollar around lunchtime with his Pittie. Cozzie thought nothing of it, wanting to play, and it turned into a brawl pretty quickly. Cozz held his own, and only had one scratch on his chest and lots of slobber in his fur, The other dog ran off (after I put two rounds of .22 into the dirt. Didn’t want to chance hitting the Cozz)(yes, I carry even around home,,, don’t you?) and was trailing some blood. Nothing copious or lifethreatening, but he definitely was the worse for wear, even though he was twice Cozzies size. And he was worn out, or has been shot at frequently, as he didn’t put it into high gear, just ‘quickened the pace’ with gunshots following him.
In hindsight, it was just two alpha mutts sorting out dominance, but if you have ever been around a dawgfight, you know it looks way worse than that. Had it been a duel, there would have been a dead or dying dawg, not two mutts running off in seperate directions.
and for those telling me to chain the Cozz up or install him in a kennel or something to that effect,,, TOO LATE,,, He’s used to his freedom and if I started doing that, I would get ZERO peace about it. He likes to roam, doesn’t roam far, but THIS HOLLAR is his territory now. Deny him that and I may as well,,,, Well, It’d be like putting you in jail for living your life, without doing anything wrong. Think about it. I have, and thats why I can’t do it.
More tomorrow, Gotta bust out the recording gear and actually do something for a podcast this week. And not a clue what right now,,,, WING IT!!!

Extremely short day at the J.O.B. Master cylinder slotted to arrive tomorrow, headlights arrived today, so that was the area I was working in: Lighting. I pre-emptively said I had no tail lights,,, Today I did have them SO, either my eyesight was lying (mehbe, it was a sunny day) or like some other things I’ve noted on this truck, they ‘wake back up’ after some running/fiddlin’. That scares me only a little. Its not uncommon for contacts to get a little corroded sitting idle, then clean back up when the electrons start flowing again.
But I was doing the lighting things, fired up Twuck to run and charge the battery back up, and that daggum squealing noise grabbed my attentions,,,, Thought it was under the hood, around the drive belt area, but the more I listened (with a tube in my ear that I was pointing at suspect areas to isolate/rule out.) I was drawing a blank. Fine,, Climb under truck and get a different perspective: That squealing noise is from the bellhousing area. Likely the throw-out bearing. Tomorrow I will have the Mastercylinder in hand, bench bleed it, install it and attempt to bleed that slave cylinder,,,, AND may be then, KNOW. IF I can bleed that slave, I will hear a pitch change when that throwout engages the pressure plate arms; it may settle down, it may even disintegrate: But I will know one way or the other. As I mentioned to a guy thats following my adventure here locally, “IF I gotta, I go full bore and cry once”. No jimmy-jackin’ around But I won’t be ordering any parts until I know for certain.
Oh, but she looks good with headlights in her eyesockets. Not so ‘Junkyard dawg’ looking. I do have a couple of marker lights that need replaced, but turns, tails and brake lights work just fine. (and need to replace the plate lamp since it was corroded to the point it fell apart in my hands checking it.)
And I found another bonus: the spare tire “keeper” is fully functional!!! Usually those things are rust heaps after a few seasons on these salt encrusted roads. I ran it down (no spare, to be rectified) and the cable even had grease on it. I don’t think the thing has ever been used, after they took the first spare off. And it may never have had a spare to begin with since the bed didn’t have a ‘hole’ for the lowering tool.(does now! LOL)
All in all: I think my time-line of “by Turkey day or soon thereafter” might have been a leettle overzealous. If I do have to pull that transmission out, Me thinks sometime in January is more intune. IF I get lucky, mid December,,,
Really want the poor girl on the road soonest though. I has a feeling Buffalo is getting ready to pull some jealous BS on me,,, Paranoid? Who? Me? Nahhh!!!! LOL
I have my heavy tools down on site, tomorrow is clutch cylinders and attempting to figure out that mess. AND, putting the ass end on stands, pulling tires (to be taken for new shoes) and getting those rear brakes loosened up and inspected. I was thinking, if I gotta pull the transmission, then would be the absolute best time to do the solid brake lines to the rear as I would have oodles of space under there to work with. May even go ahead and pull the tank anyways, as it is in the way as well, and cleaning it out wouldn’t be a bad thing. (Note: shitty part about this is where she is. A grassy spot near my dads woodshed, Not exactly the most solid ground to be putting jackstands on,,, I use sections of 2×10 scrap wood as a base, but even they sink in time. And this is one HEAVY tWuck!)
Anywhoos,,, My apologies for no pictures,,, I’m horrible about that; getting in the groove, moving, doin’, and the whole “document document document” thing never even crosses my mind until I am mid-post sharing with you. I’m too cheap (read ‘Broke as F!’) to hire a camera person to follow me around (and would probably get them hurt in short order, I move unpredictably.) Besides, I don’t like being IN FRONT of the cameras, or under the lime-light,,, Always been the “behind the scenes” sort.
I’m back at it tomorrow while the weather is on my side. Little deals and big deals abound on Twuck, like getting the locks on the boxes replaced.(on thier way) cleaning out the boxes of gunk and grunge. fixing the drivers side interior door handle (have in hand, just need to do) OH,,, Forgot that part. The key that came with the ignition lock cylinder? AMAZINGLY works the door locks. Have to jiggle a little bit, but it DOES work the locks. How cool is THAT? Maybe I should play the lottery this month!

Filler material here,,,, I did something so out of character for me this week; well, out of character if you think I don’t think practically,,,,
I took Lyssa off Buffalo and am flying WITHOUT any kayaks currently. I even took all the kayaky gear out of the backseat for the time being. Part of that is the fact that Cozzie likes to get in the back seat when on the highway, and he doesn’t give a rats ass if he tears anything up. I caught him chewing on my PFD,,, He didn’t destroy anything, but the fact that he was making an attempt, was enough to get me into action. I could easily see him gnawing a hole in my drysuit (which was back there as well.)
The practical aspect?,,, I am tied and bound to get Twuck on the road, weather besides the point; taking any time away from Twuck would ‘slow me down’. I’ll have more time (HA!!! Who says?) later after all the fun of Hicle Recovery is over. By then, as things settle into whatever new routine I develop, Lyssa or Blue Jean, or Rio can ride high again. On Buffalo only,,, Work TWuck, Play truck,,, Thats the goal.

As for the rest of the world, this week, if I haven’t been under the hood of something, be that the hood of a twuck, or welding hood, my nose has been stuffed in my Kindle. Not reading anything but pure fiction right now. No research, no historical stuff, just pure fun to read, get out of my own head for a bit, fiction. I don’t want to start reading all the ‘worldly’ bullshit and start feeling anxious about shit: it will make me want to start short-cutting, cutting corners, whatever you wanna call it. I’m shooting for longevity here, on a budget of course, so some things will get ‘cheap’ed, but only the stuff I know won’t be critical if they go sideways.
Kinda like that slave cylinder thing. Hoping I can make whats in there work. Not that I am trying to shortcut, because I know, its gonna fail. I am only hoping I can forstall that failure to further down the road when the finances aren’t as strapped as they are now; there is a whole lot more involved there than ‘just a $30 part’. AND, I’m lazy,,, I HATEZ doing anything twice,,, If that cylinder fails, I have to pull the transmission,,, I do that, well, I’ve already spelled that out a time or two, didn’t I? Don’t wanna do that job twice just due to lack of money in one circumstance.
Current high dollar expenditures are going to be those tires. Those are the KNOWN, I fully expect at least one or two others before long. I stated to Son of Bossman, I got extremely lucky with how easy she was to get running. I recall a recovery ‘hicle back in the day when I wrenched: a barn find. Porsche 928. Guy brought it to us, and me being the Newb,* got the project (the others all KNEW it was gonna be a mess) I ended up replacing the ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM, from tank, to pump to lines, to injectors,,, EVERYTHING… The tar that had accumulated in those parts had solidified. DOods ‘SWAG barn find’ went from a couple grand find to nearly the cost of a New 911 in one week. And that was just the start. I won’t lie to you, that was my biggest fear with this. Had I smelled varnish during any of my prelem checks, I’d have walked away.
Not gryping, but its gonna be a crappy paycheck this week. Two days off for weather REALLY cuts deep. Plus, this is a double bill week. sigh,,,,

*I wasn’t a newb, I had a few years under my belt then, but I WAS the new guy in the shop. I inherited a GMC Safari project with a warranty motor swap too. Essentially, all the shitty work no one wanted to deal with because it wasn’t going to make any commision. Lesson for those young’uns that are thinking of that line of work,,, You will “Pay your Dues” and not just in bloody knuckles. And you will do it everytime you move your tool box to a new place, even when you move it to your OWN place.

Weather shifted back towards springlike today, managed a decent day, though not a full day. Better than sittin’ home feelin’ ill, watching snow fall.
And I am awaiting the arrival of Parts for BlooTwuck,,,
THAT waiting game.
My current focus is making sure that the clutch hydraulics function properly. Replacing the Master Cylinder and line, PRAYING that the Slave is good. Probably a fools wish: I will admit, but watching my debt spiral right now, I gotta watch things. IF, the slave is crapped out, that means pulling the transmission to replace it, and if I am going that far: pressure plate, Friction plate, reface flywheel, pull flywheel and replace rearmain seal, and replace the slave and throwout bearing. Do the Whole shebang and be done once. The reason the Mastercylinder is crap, was lack of a cap. Old biologics made it into that fluid and that was the gunk I ‘sucked’ out (plugging my suction lines a few times as well) and lots of water got mixed in. It looked like grey pus coming out of the line I pulled. Again, fingers crossed and prayers sent high for a miracle on the slave cylinder.
Then comes the fun of replacing hard lines in the brake system. Did a front to back and I think I will be better served just replacing them, not patching them. Once those are done, then I get to see what needs replaced or repaired on the grippy corners of the system.
I’ll be getting Twuck new shoes at that time. (easier to load them in BUffalo and get them all done, not risking driving to the place on them.) I’m not going to play games with shoes. Seen instances of blow-outs on these fullsized trucks and NO, Don’t wanna join that particular club. Had a blow out on one of our work trucks recently, a rear tire thank goodness, thats close enough for me.
I have quite a bit of re-wiring to do on the back half too. I have full lighting on the forward end, but no lights at all on the ass end. Some of that may be found while I am doing the brake lines. Most of it, I believe, is where it goes into the tool boxes. Theres a rats nest of wires back there near the bulbs. Funny-wiring doesn’t bother me like it does some people. I owned mid 80’s FIATS,,,, Wiring diagrams that made NewYuck City Transportation maps look simple. 16 relays, 46 fuses not including the inline ones,,, 6 of those relays were just for the headlamps. A Racing Friend and his wife in Columbus, ‘tubbed’ one, and the wiring harness(s) alone weighed in at 120#: this on a car that had a curb weight of 1350#
Yuppers,,, waitin’ on parts. and one of those ‘parts’ is wiring diagrams,,, A full repair book, but whats essential to me are those diagrams inside.
She runs though. Called the Proxy again, to get a little more info. That fuel that is in that tank,,, less than 2 years old. They had been airing up the tires and moving it around on its own power up till the cats got cut off. Somewhere in the last two years, they lost the keys; likely during the last “business change” the owner was doing. (The building has had three or four businesses ran through it over the last 5 years that I recall.) I won’t be dropping the tank, but I am getting a filter for the ‘Just in Case’ moment of sluggishness.
Feels like a lot, but in reality, I can see this truck being road ready around, or shortly thereafter, Turkey day. And yeah, I am feeling a little anxious in the process. BUT, I am not pushing hard and doing things as close to ‘proper’ as I can, without running my debt sprial into the stratosphere. Hey, I’m a redneck, and this IS a truck,,, Ain’t gotta be ‘perfect’, just gotta be solid. (and I think I really did manage to get SOLID in this one, considering how easy it was to get-er up’n’purrin’ ) The real detail work can take place as she starts earning her keep. (much like whats gonna happen to Buffalo once Twuck is running full time. I need to replace Buff’s drivers door hinges in a bad way, Can’t do that with her on the road 24/7. Twuck as a second/primary will allow me to do those little detail things. And I use the Buff when I need to do something to Twuck. They both win: its my wallet that loses,,,LOL)(teats or tires, right?)
As for the crap in the “Real world”,,,, To say I am disgusted in things right now would be an understatement. I’m not going to link anything, or post any memes about it; not even going to say anything about other this little paragraph. I just keep watching the markets, feeling a little anxious to get Twuck rolling n legal before the bottom falls out of the barrel called the Petro-Dollar.
Have y’all seen the signs about ’rounding off to the nearest nickle’ because no one has pennies anymore, because it costs to much to make them? Those signs are everywhere around here. Most people are blowing it off as just another phase. I see it as one more sign towards the collapse of the Empire. (the next embed is for those scratching thier heads at my statement above)

Ok, I will fisk some of his missive above. He starts off saying there was no meteor strike you can point at to show “here is where it all began”,,, I have to disagree there, I can point to a a couple possible points there. Back in 1865 for one, when the Federal Government shifted roles and became “THE” were before it was “these”,,, That’s one. The other was in 1913 with the adoption of the Federal Reserve act, and national income tax. When the Money was ‘farmed out’ to a private corporation, culpability was shifted off the shoulders of Big Brother. I want to point out a little viral vid making its rounds.

The family was broken by promise of continuing care after a certain age, further breaking up the Family ways, where the Grands would help raise/educate the kids while the parents did the things to keep the roof overhead and food on the table. Oft-times, the kids themselves would have some responsiblities towards those goals as well. Generational education AT HOME,,, Right and wrong were handled by the FAMILY
not some indoctrinated over educated moron with a degree and a paycheck, out of sight of the family,,,, We lost a lot of that with the Communist additions of the FDR years after the Great Depression. Guaranteed Social Retirement became a drug that helped further break the American Family into our current nuclear mess (MY OPINION OF COURSE,,,) (and I could go on about other social downfalls from that ‘GSR’, this isn’t the post for that though.)

There is also a SERIOUS problem with our food supply,,, And I think this has a lot to do with our current situation in this country. There are some voices out there in the wild that are on the soapboxes about it, RFKjr for one,,, And you’ll note, there is a louder form of heckling in his direction,,, Wonder why that is? Maybe the fact that he is RIGHT?
I think he is. And while I hate lecturing, I can tell you the results of my own personal experience the last 6 weeks. Yes, I have been on this diet since September,,, I’m sitting at 180# currently, I DO need to start working on rebuilding the muscle areas,,, So that weight will start to go back up,,, in a way I have more control over, and not around me middle section.
BUT,,, WHAT HAD THE BIGGEST EFFECT? I eliminated HFCS, everything that had Modified Corn starch or Modified”food” starches. I eliminated ALL seed oils, or seed based processes,,, Especially getting away from CORN products in general. I threw out $100 or more worth of ‘food’ stuff because it wasnt really FOOD,,,. All of this stuff wasn’t for sale in the late 70’s, it started becoming a thing late in the 80’s and really took off as the Corporate Profits made many ‘look the other way’.
Yes, some of the meats I eat are likely raised on corn products,,,, I don’t know if that makes a difference: some ‘experts’ will say yes,,, I don’t know. If in doubt, go grass fed/finished. It does taste different, not as much fat on it and that says something too, doesn’t it?
And I had one day where I ‘slipped’ because I just didn’t want to deal with a meal prep. The next day, the way I felt, just 24 hours later,,, OhGawd,,, EVERYTHING hurt,,, knees, back, shoulders, wrist, elbow, my neck, MY HEAD,,,, I have been slowly detoxing, and that one day put it all right back,,,, It was akin to the worst hangover EVER,,,
Are you wondering what’s got my ire up this AM? Not just that video,,, I REMEMBER,,,, I remember what a day at the beach was like in the early 80’s. (the image says 1960, but those are late 70’s haircuts and styles) I see people struggling with weight, and making excuses (“I’m just genetically dispositioned like this.”) or all of the Ozempic commercials flyin’around. A drug that EU has banned in contrast to our banning things, like steriods, that they sell over the counter,,,, I REMEMBER

It takes some work, but you can eat HEALTHY, and for not much more than you already do. You WILL have to prepare it yourself,,, because no one else cares,,,,
and the healthier your diet, the clearer your head gets. Believe me, it DOES,,,, You start seeing things differently; you’ll find your mind is running at break neck speeds, clearer, more focused. Not scattered over the horizons of distraction, dopamine hits and depression.
You can break free from the rat race, without pursuing the dreams of Elon. It’s called SELF-DISCIPLINE,,, Don’t buy that crap you don’t need,, it’s that simple. Look at it like you look at prepping,,,, Does this serve more than one purpose? How many functions does it provide to my end goal? (like me and Twuck. How many purposes does she fill? I can’t even count them all. Bare assed Guess; at least 5 broad brushed ones. The benefits far outweigh the expenditure.) I am not saying you need to play into the hustle culture. You just need to stay focused on what YOUR goals are, not compromise because the bosses say so. YOU,,,,,
And stop beating yourself up everyday because you didn’t quite make ‘the list’. YOU and you alone spend the most amount of time in your head: no one else. Stop being abusive about it.
Don’t treat mistakes as failures,,, use them as learning tools to keep climbing.

In counter to that thought, ask yourself this question: IS this purely entertainment factor? or more specifically, ‘is this to distract me from my miserable existance?’
If you answer yes to that last, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Fantasizing about moving your ass afar is RUNNING AWAY,,,, and guess what, You can run, but you can’t hide: you will always catch up to yourself. I ran away for years and even now, there are times where I want to run again. I know better now.
Don’t like the way you live? Ok, whats eating at you about that? If its that you aren’t where you think you deserve to be? Maybe you need to shut off the propaganda machines for a while and get in touch with YOUR priorities. Not that “Dream” bullshit that you have to be hyponotized into believing anyway. Take a vakay, but not the usual way. Take that money you were gonna spend to fly somewhere and spend mad money on 5star hotels, to make yourself feel like a rockstar or something; take that money, and start driving,,, stop at the little greasy spoons, listen to people, ask questions, have a beer with someone you would never have met otherwise. Eat something that aint’ on the menu where you normally eat. Take a risk and do something out of the ordinary for you.
And ACCEPT the fact that the ‘blanks’ you are filling in, are YOUR FAULT, not those of the media liars. YOU chose to listen to that bullshit: the Sirens song is all they have,,, you choose to listen or not. Stop accepting that bullshit as YOURS, It ain’t! It was programming, applied from day one, and continually reinforced over the years. YOU CHOOSE to accept the programming,
or not,,,
Take the baby steps, Accept your self ownership, take the blame for your own fuck ups, be ready to stand your ground and KO that asshat that needs it.
If we all do that, We WILL be free again. and we won’t need to run away anymore. We might be scared shit-less, wanting to be far away, somewhere other than here,
