The other day I posted this screed up and in the tail end, I mentioned the ‘life, liberty. pursuit’ thing from our Founding Documents.
BUT, what defines happiness? I think that is a deeper problem than many consider. Can’t define it can you? You start reaching for it and suddenly, it hits this “well, that made me happy, for a minute, but,,,,”
And, and this is in My Opinion, due to that fleeting nature, lack of definition in modern, can be understood by everyone, words, Materialism has been the goto effort,,,, I see it all the time on the ‘Zon, fashion trends to make you feel happy that are here today, gone by Friday, and you have all this ‘stuff’ that made you happy for a minute, but now have to store it somewhere.
Great to keep the economic wheels on the bus,,,, Shipping and handling costs, the storage building rentals, property values for such: its a long line of economic transactions that follow ‘make me happy’,,,
Me and Kayaking,,,, I find peace (happiness of one sort) while out kayaking, but between times, there are the thoughts of “what where when how” that keep me on edge. And I spend mad money on ‘toys’ to make getting on water more enjoyable/safer, as well as the off/on of training and education of techniques: all to make mitigating danger less cumbersome, so that I CAN enjoy that peace (happiness) more.
The Inuit/Aluetians didn’t have that problem because the Kayak (Qajaq) was a tool to survival and transportation,,, NOT a toy or hobby. It was a critical component towards that PURSUIT of happiness, not the ends. The other parts, like the tulek, paddle, throwing stick, floats, were all tools of the trade for safety or recovery of the game. Different stresses on the mind from ‘pursuit of happiness’,,,,
I was at Da’s on Sunday, he had some independently produced show up, along the lines of a NatGeo documentary, on peoples of the Amazons. One part hit me sideways,,, the Producer was discussing how the tribes are being ‘civilized’ and brought into the modern world (and that was obvious with the littles running around with tablets and iphones,,) but how the Elders were falling into states of depression, and sometimes, actual madness,,, One of the interviews with an elderly couple was saying how this new world is ‘too stressful’, needing money, and remembering living in the forest that provided everything they needed ‘for free’ (not true, but it was there for the taking, if you knew how to get it (also called ‘work’ ) )
Not a great example towards my ‘pursuit of happiness’ thinks, but shows that such is NOT the same for everyone,,,,
I honestly do not think pursuing material goods is where it is at. I think that happiness, being so fleeting, is NOT the direction. JOY, is a direction, because joy can be sustained,,, Joy is not dependent on WHAT you have, but what you are, how you feel, how you think. Its that peace I feel when out on the water and getting the kayak to edge perfectly, Its the feelings I have when I turn a wrench, just so, and things do as they are supposed to. More the Zen moments than the effort moments.
LOL who am I kidding,,,, I can’t even define JOY properly,,,, I only know Joy is much less fleeting than happiness,,, Joy is not as intense in ‘flavor’ but much more filling,,,,
and its getting late enough in the AM, that I need to drop this ball into the mix, and get me ready for the J.O.B. today,,,, Toss any ideas ya got into the fray, or call me a bullshitter if ya want,,,,
