techy talk

Whew!!!! Tha-was a close’un!

Some of y’uns might have seen some glitches happening here on the site, last night. Maybe, maybe not, but I thought for certain I had lost 6 days of posting,,,,

And this one was not a “did it to myself” instance,, only, yeah, I did, sorta-kinda,,,,

When I paid for a domain set up, WP also made my site ‘more compatible’ for the server and switched me over to a ‘plug in’ set up, vs the “Classic Blog” set up I have been running for the last 12+ years. THAT was why I was seeing ghosts flitting around this here back room and fighting with clanks and clunks,,,

I finally broke down and got ahold of the help-desk, and talked to a REAL PERSON (omg!) and they ‘took over’ on the Exorcism after we had talked about what was needed done. And they had to roll EVERYTHING back 6 days to do it.

Luckily, I didn’t lose a damned thing, except the last audio file, and I had that on back up here in the MAC so re-loading it was ‘easy peasy’. Fixed one widget that was wiped (no idea why since it was older than 6 days ) and I may yet find other issues that need fixed.

BUT!

Because I am back into the territory I KNOW, not that whackadoodle plug in crap,,,

I can breathe easier now.

More laters,,, Just wanted to give ya an update on what the crazy was about last night,,,

AI terrors and tremors

For those intimidated by AI, Y’all need give this a read.

And for the TL:DR, This isn’t about AI taking over the world, its about P&L’s: profit and loss statements. IF, what I am reading is true, than AI as we know it AIN’T Gonna take over the world. IT IS, gonna make some changes to the world as we know it,

TechySatyrday

I sorta recall why I quit chasing computer chips around,,,   I don’t enjoy the game of ‘keeping up’ when it comes to what the machines can do.   And I have never liked that as things move forward, much of what I did enjoy, no longer works.

Like Mechwarrior,,, The ONLY game I was fanatic about.    Worked great up through XP and Vista, doesn’t work on any of the upgraded machines now.

Have you tried making a machine run Vista lately?    Big reason why I gave up on WIndoze,,,,

Humpday admin work

Not at the job,,, that was an easy-peasy day.  Nopes,,, just spent the last 2 hours playing on a computer screen, establishing ‘Ownership’ of my recent domain purchase across the various search engines of the world; logins, verification process, copy html code, track back to my admin page, insert code, REVERIFY,,, wash rinse repeat with next search engine,,,,,

Why?

SEO,,, you remember that word from earlier, when I asked all of y’uns to hit that ‘LIKE’ button,,,     Everything in attempt to drive my traffic up again.    I’ve been VERY lax on this since the 2012 Dramas that nearly drove me off the webs altogether.    Yah,,, 13 years of hiding under my rock.

About time I crawled back out.

Working on another podcast,,, Not really scripting this one: instead cribbing a ‘map’ of subjects I wanna talk about, to keep the thing flowing, shooting from the hip into a micrphone, much like I do my regular posts (and exactly like I am doing with this one, sans the mental map,,,)

If’n you like these posts, a little support would be most kind.

Now, I ain’t gonna lie to ya,,, some of the things I am doing here lately are not very comfortable for me.  Like that little linky above,,, I sorta feel icky posting that stuff, almost like I am one of those pan-handlers you see at the ends of the off-ramps in most major cities.

ONLY, they aren’t showing up here at a website, that they pay for, plugging away at a keyboard or wrangling DAW’s to put up a podcast (which is still in the trial stages,,,  more on that in a minute)   THIS SHIT IS WORK, and so far has been a leech, not an asset.   Not that I am looking at making a living doing this or anything,,,   I’d rather sell books instead, but that means I need to get off my duff and WRITE THEM,,,    Yes, I already wrote and published two, and one needs a re-write to get rid of that funky  cliff hanger, AND needs a sequel to round it off.  BUT, I put far more effort into showing up here everyday and if I can get a little love for that, well, I’ll suck up the anxiety of feeling like a pan-handler.

FYI,,, the link there is totally secure, goes straight to my Credit Union, not some middleman account services like PP or Venmo (same-same under different names.).   And you can determine if you or I pay the transaction fees.   You cover them, I get the full amount,,, if I do, they take a percentage (3% I think) out of the donation.

There ain’t gonna be any dealings with a banking service where they don’t make a dime.    Thats just a fact of life since long before Yeashuah tossed the tables and money lenders out of the temple.

Side note.   Pharisee: a person who pretends or decieves.     I found this interesting as I had always thought the Pharisees were a tribe of Judaism,,,  I’ll leave that thought right there to stew a bit longer,,,,

———————————————-

as for what’s going on in the great wide world,,,, Government shutdown, (hadn’t noticed it myself, but I can imagine some that are supposed to get a check may find things slower than usual,,,) supposed 100000 Fed emps resigning as they established early in the year with DOGE.   Have you noticed that particular entity hasn’t been making the news so much of late?   Especially now that Elon has stepped out of it and back into rocketry and electric ‘hicles…

Starship 11 is slotted for launch in early October.   don’t know the exact date, and hadn’t done a dive into it.  Only that this one is the last of the 3rd Gens to boost.   Here’s hoping that this one is as successful as the last where they pulled all of the launch goals off.

The space race is still on, and there is just as much techrobbery going on now as there was when it was USA vs USSR.   only now, its the Chinese vs US Private companies.    I find that funny in some ways.    Even NASA is finding it easier and cheaper to hire others to boost their stuff to orbit.    Thats Free Market Capitalism at its finest.   Get the GOV out of the frellin’ way and let the guys willing to risk thier money and property do thier thing.

I wanna see a small base in operation, on the moon, before I slip this mortal coil.   It would be even nicer if such were to be AND a start up on Mars, before I jettison this reality.

Time will tell.   Fingers crossed.

Hit that “Like” if ya liked this,

I’ll have more up tomorrow.  Look for another session of my spoken word this weekend,,,   Oh,,, slipped my range finders, that did.    Interestingly enough, that last little ‘cast, has over 100 downloads since its creation.   I didn’t expect to see more than 20-30.  SO, y’all gave me a pat on the back even though only one of y’uns gave written feedback.    I guess I didn’t do too bad since no one came back and said “Quit while you are ahead.”  LOL

Follow up on Oofff!!!

Hate to say it but the medal was kind of a “Gimme”; There were only two of us in that class. So, last place, woohooo… With that up front, it was competitive. I never lost sight of the other paddler, but he was running a home built Night Heron Design which Nick Schade came up with to improve on the Greenland Inuit designs. Hull speed is about 3/4 mph faster than mine and it showed. I never lost sight of him, but he continually pulled ahead of me and by the end of the race, had near a half mile lead on me. Neither of us EVER stopped paddling (other than to grab some water ’cause that wind was drying everyone out. Dry enough that you couldn’t spit!) and he was using a Wing Paddle where I was using my Greenland. There is a performance difference, but I am still impressed that a GP can still compete with a Wing: maybe not beat it, but it will give it a run for its money. Considering the GP was designed by primitive peoples using anthropomorphic measurements, and the Wings are computer designed high tech paddles, I think that says more about “human ingenuity” than mere words here can express.

And there were participation awards as well, but In this case I ain’t giving the promoters any shit about it. Just showing up at the finish line was a challenge and a half!!! There was a kickin’ wind coming out of the west, straight into our faces for the return trip and getting through that was no fun. Cooling, as the splash from the paddles kept the quickly drying sweat washed off the face, but damn!!! what a battle heading up-wind.

Selkie did frigging PERFECT. No splash off the bow!!! She just sliced right in and didn’t matter if it was glass flat or chop or wave sets. Chop did nothing against performance while wave sets played with her stern a bit, and she did surf a wave face or three. Not much, but enough to give the old dude at the paddle a momentary respite, and a small ‘turbo boost’.

What needs changed though? 6.5 miles will tell you something about your design that “isn’t quite right”. In my case, its the bulkhead footrest I came up with. It worked, worked well, but the angle is ALL OFF. My heels went numb fairly early, and I started shifting around trying to make them comfortable and that put the strain on other parts and by the end of the race, I felt like I had a hole bored into my left asscheek. Nothing wrong with my seat pad, it was all about the footrest and that is easy enough to fix.

Even though I felt stiff and unstable for the first mile, that wasn’t ‘a boat issue’: that was a “I’m in need of seat time” issue, and by the end of the first mile, my hips had loosened up and my mind put into ‘sea-legs’ mode and I was fine. Wave-sets off the rear quarter didn’t goose me after that first mile like they did when I started out, and I was paddling smoother with each hundred yards traveled; not the epileptic seizure splash and churn that I started with. I really needed to get A LOT more seat time in before this race, but is what it is, and now I have my mind conditioned for the rest of the paddle season.

B, the indomitable, stubborn persistent bullish paddler he is, came across the line last of the entire group. He had done the long distance run so had to do two laps to my one, and that wind was kickin’ EVERYONES ass. Even the surfski’s were looking rather dogged out when they crossed the line at the last. B was in a Perception Vizcaya (yeah, the blue one I used to own.) and while its a great little recreational boat, B (and meself vicariously) found it ‘It ain’t no race boat’. Great hull design for shallow waters where you want to ride over debris and what not, but seeing the double wake pattern along its gunwales tells me it creates its own drag.* You are fighting the boat to move forward at anything over ‘mild cruise’ (3-4mph). if you go for higher, you have to double your efforts to hold it and that wears you down. B did that for 13 miles of open water, 6.5 of which was in a head wind of at least 8mph with gusting up to 25.

And this was the first big paddle of the season. Wooofffff!!!!

T, bullheaded and stubborn herself, chose to do the same lap as I did, but she did it in her Duck; An inflatable whitewater ‘kayak’. She fought probably twice as hard as B and I did because she was still set up for whitewater, not flat water and the bow of her Duck kept trying to fly off the water when she was headed into the wind. I watched her crossing the bay towards the finish line and a halfway serious gust would lift the front and turn her boat ninety degrees to her heading, and she would have to fight to correct it. She paddled half the race from the kneeling position to keep her weight forward and stop that, but that’s a very hard position to paddle in if you don’t have the ‘saddle’ for it. She did finish, and I could hear the exhaustion in her voice while talking to her afterwards.

That fight she had was why I am saying not giving the promoter shit for the participation awards. Just crossing the finish line yesterday was a challenge and those that did, deserve something ‘just for showing up to the fight’.

Damned good day out, and I mentioned to B that I hadn’t felt this relaxed since around August of last year. I need to get out to the Church of the Two Bladed Paddle a whole lot more often. The world seems brighter today for it.

* In comparison, in Selkie, I didn’t see the first wake wave until well near my cockpit, while moving at nearly 5mph. And it was a lot smaller than the wave the Viz was making: it never rose to the gunwales like what I saw on the Viz. No way to change the design of his boat, but I am certain he will keep in mind what its capable of, and more importantly what it is NOT capable of, in the future.
