It was the early part of the Tweens when the political divisions of the United States reached irreconcilable differences. Ted, a burnt out computer programmer, and Jim, a double amputee combat vet, reverse engineer the pentagons drone program and create a rebel air force. While traveling the country helping others defend what is left of the country, they run afoul a most evil woman intent on creating a serfdom within the country.

Dam Son! I’ve never seen that, not even oncet. Did a number on it, fer sure. Caps should have numbers and arrows stamped on em? Are ya positive it weren’t already there? Coulda been overlooked if’n there was any remnants of the old stuff still there obscuring the view. Either way, opens up a totally new can o’ worms, it do.
Just outta curiosity, what was yer torque setting when ya did the mains?? Goin’ on memory(!!), seems like 70 rings a bell, or right around there.
Just spitballin’, but ya didn’t torque ’em all the way in one sequence did ya? Just askin’, tryin to cover all the bases. IOW, all the way from 0 to 70 in 1 sequence. (Yeah, I’ll be duckin’ now)! Man, that just totally sucks big green donkey di*ks, don’t it? I’ve done some *interesting* sheeiitt, meself, that left me scratchin’ me gourd, and askin’ meself just what in the ever lovin’ fuq I were a-thinkin’. Still remembers ’em too (most of ’em anyways)! Some were real doosies, they were.
I’ll quit annoyin’ ya now! I’ll pray to the Big Orange Chebby Bowtie (and Louis Chevrolet, too) tonight fer ya!
L’s!
Y’all take care,
Mike in FLA.

No numbers on mains, just forward arrow and casting mold numbers (T29 and all had same or T39) and I did it in three, but you are right to ask, so won’t be thrownin nuthin atcha. Yes. 70 ouy 67 inners is what the book called for, and NO, I never heard it crack unless I mistook it for mt torque wrench ‘poppin’
This one has a very vague ‘2’ stamped in it, and that may have been why I put it the 2 slot, but it Fits 4, not 2,,, and for the life of me, i could not tell you how they got fubared up. I set everything in labeled egg cartons and had them out of the way,
And no, I did this, it wasnt prior. I would have caught the cracks when I was scrubbing things (and thats when I saw that #2 and got confused)

Dammit man! Hatez that happened.
Scary that I actually remembered that torque spec! Yeah, those middle mains with the long studs for the windage tray kinda screw things up ’cause ya hafta use sumthin like a crow foot wrench to put on the torque wrench.
Whew, dam glad I don’t hafta duck!
Since ya don’t have numbers on the caps, maybe take a dremel and make ’em. Or, a small set of stamps. BTW, what are yer plans for the fixin?
As a rule, egg cartons are a wonderful thing fer organizing parts.
Y’all take care,
Mike in FLA.

At this point, plans for fixin’ are attempting to find replacement, repair it last resort,,, Issue is, its a cast peice, and welding on it, only causes MORE problems,,, Finding a replacement may be problematic unless I dig in scrap yards,,, and even there, questions arise as to where the bore sits on the centerline. I know they machined the caps and block at same time. ALSO,,, I did find numbers and they are ass backwards, tail to face,,, the big block at the end, the one everyone calls #5 is labeled as #1,,, WTF! makes me think they orientation arrow is off too.

That well and truly SUCKS! Your truck so I’ll try to stay in my lane. But… Seeing that they line bore all those caps at once, that makes it a unique fit. Is there any chance you can weld cast iron with your resources? I tried welding a casting once. It was a complete failure. But that’s just my experience. And I broke ALL the rules when I tried to. I know you can weld, have you ever welded a casting successfully? It is small enough that preheating with a rosebud would be possible. Maybe lock that rascal in a press to close up the gap completely? Build a jig with some square tubing and allthread? It might last long enough that you can turn enough profit to buy a used engine or a short block. Or it might go well and outlast the rest of the engine. Or it could be three wasted days plus material… I’ll pray for you. Keep us posted.

Yes, I can weld Cast, TIG actually, but I DO NOT LIKE TO as it can cause a shit ton of other issues, LIKE FURTHER CRACKING elsewhere,, usually about 1/4″ away from where you fixed,,, Pre-heating it is mandatory, and I usually wil heat the entire thing to dark cherry red before I get going. By the time I start, its below that threshold, but still hot enough. THEN, put back into the burner or forge or whatever you used to heat it and bring it back up to dark cherry and let cool SLOW,,,, That allows the crystal structure to re-organize around the weld
And its still NO GAURANTEE that it won’t crack. Lots of work for what may become another lump of junk.
I found a set of three CNC’ed main caps, ordered them and I will see what I can do. Thats the best I can say right now. Look to tomorrows post for some details,
and PLEASE, if you think I am chasing unicorns, LET ME KNOW,,,, You’ll understand more when you read it.
