Little history (of me) here for ya. Back around 2012ish, when I was doin’ all that runnin’round the country, I was involved in a small project of ‘off the shelf’ nature. I cut the bore/barrel for a 30mm Bofors cannon. That Southbend Lathe (I sold during Covidiocy and now regret selling) had a 48″ bed on it and we made the jig for the boreing bar cutter to mount to the bed.

And we made a sinebar rifling plug using that lathe. Don’t know what became of the barrel after my part was done, but I would imagine that there is, at very least, one hell of a replica of a bigbore gun out there. That barrel was turned from a mining core-drill shaft: 3’dia drill steel. I had to detemper the steel by lettting it sit in a bonfire overnight and slowly cool in the ashes. And carbide cutters were the only thing that would bite it. the HSS bits just chirped and went all sparky sparky. There were lots of gallons of cutting coolant used during the boring process, let me tell you. If that thing started getting warm, it started getting tempered again.

My payment for that job was that lathe. No cash exchanged hands ever in that deal, and that might lead one to believe that a certain barrel is not in a replica. But that trail there is cold stone now,,, a couple of the parties involved are now deep six (through natural causes) and contacts have been broken for years. (so the glowies can chase ghosts, I know nothing past what I just said,,,)

Yes Virginia, it is legal for Civvies to own cannon. (for now,) They might moan and complain that its a ‘grey area’ but those are defined as ‘arms’ under law. Certain models are in the “destructive device’ nomenclature and require the tax stamp and background check, and actually owning explosive rounds INDIVIDUALLY require same (so a $200 tax stamp and BC for each individual round on top of the actual cost of such,,,, gets pricy quick,,,) but yes, you can own a 105 with HE shells as a Civilian. Proabably be able to own a 155 as well, but where the hell would you park that beast?!?!? (but if you had that parked in the side yard, I would say your neighbors would be very civil with you in all ways,,,, a squib load in one of those would shatter windows for half a block,,,,)

And maybe its not common knowledge, but when the Brits went to Concord to confiscate guns, they weren’t after the small arms of rifles and pistols, they were after the cannon the Revolutionaries had stored. Keep that in mind when you think of what the founders were thinking when they wrote the 2A. (believe me, the lawyers of today DO know that little fact,,,,)

If it does, someone is going to have a VERY bad day that day. But, gotta admit, I have no idea if ever was finished; all I made was the barrel and that was that. I would like to think it was, and that someone was able to take it out somewhere and play with it, at least once,,,, I would have payed good money to be there then, but,,,,,
