Welcome to my brain. It’s messy. It’s interesting. And it’s all connected if you stick around long enough. "Believe Nothing: no matter who said it, even if I have said it, except it agree with your own reason and common sense. Siddhartha Guatamo, the Buddha.

Well that was educational,,,

Kayaky post warning

I put a small section of epoxy clear on Lyssa yesterday after the J.O.B, thing was complete.   Only a small section as I didn’t have a lot of acetone to clean the whole hull, AND i wanted to test what it would look like and not need to work hard to remove it IF I didn’t like it.

well, I liked it.   And when it had cured past ‘tacky’ but not quite workable, I sprayed it down with water (straight, no soaps) and was SHOCKED

Might be you recall I had a post up about the CHEVY/FORD discussion amongst racers about 400 finish hulls being faster than polished hulls (both arguments provide plenty of ‘proof’ for their stance,,,)

but what I found last night was even polished gel coat is ‘sticky’ in water and that epoxy was slick as snot!!!!  and that was just laid on, no polish, no buffing, no sanding to mirror finish first, just laid on with a brush and let ‘settle’ in to a smooth finish.

Well, plans for my weekend are now solid and I am not going to be putting that epoxy on YET: I want Lyssa for whats upcoming, even if she isn’t completed.  I’ll fair out the section I did hit, and then buff the hull out to shiny and call it good until I can spend a good solid week (of after hours) getting her finished up.   No rush, the ‘race’ that isn’t is just between B and i, so,,,,,   and I want it done  RIGHT

(side note: this AM, I quickly faired the epoxy, hit it with 1000 grit wet sand and wiped it down. Still slick as snot when wet, looks no different than the surrounding gel-coat, and I can tell (how it feels under the sand paper) that it will buff to a high shine FAST! I may just ‘go-fer-it’ but that means I will need acetone today,,,)

  1. I know it’s more a matter of quantity for you, but I still – due to… non-standard… upbringing – find it weird to NOT have at least some acetone handy. Might be seldom-used, but when called for.. it’s so very called for.

    • Head scratch,,,,
Just what sort of education does a young minotaur recieve while in the labyrinthes, especially when one considers the myriad uses of acetone in certain ‘clandestine’ arts,,,,,

Yes, you are correct in ‘quantity’ over available,, I have some, just not enough to clean off a 17′ kayak, and there are wax residues that need scrubbed off as well as my grubby pawprints.

      • Mainly it was just handy to have a good solvent readily available. Though there was a time a LOT of two-piece items had to become one-piece items and, being ABS, were readily bonded with acetone – but they were made to ‘snap fit’ together, so it was made that much easier.
