Dio vs Yak rnd 2
Having half made my coaming so far, I have to say I fully appreciate why Brian at Cape Falcon Kayak charges $200 for one. Wrestling a pack of Rottweiler puppies in sight of a cat is far less challenging and requires less hands. I would imagine after a couple thousand under your belt, you have oddles of tricks, but for that first time, woof!

Coaming, jig, and torture instruments
Its not finished, this is just the inner wall. I still need to cut the lip and bend it on to this one. I am thinking thinner pieces, built up to the half inch thickness, rather than one big 1/2″x1/2″ piece. A glue and clamp, walk it around the perimeter process.
Even with how easy this stuff bends, a 7′ piece is a handful for one person; and while it bends well, it sure doesn’t want to stay bent at first. LOL, the cat had a surprise when it got away from me once.
Well, back to making wood chips and sawdust. This journey has only began.

Looks like you’re using gorilla glue. It probably likes that green wood.
What about shrinkage when the wood dries ?

Accounted for. I added a full inch in width and length to account for shrinkage. If it ends up a bit big, it’ll still work. Its sitting in the rafters with a spanish windlass and a brace holding shape while it all dries. I decided to make the ‘lip’ by using 1/2″ manila rope stitched on through holes drilled in the frame, then spar varnish the heck outta it.
Also, the tree was dead, so the wood isn’t truly green, just damp. It was victim to lightening a couple years back: blew most of the bark clean off the upper half. I’m using the lower 8′ above the trunk. Still has a couple of knots I have to work around in cutting stock, but not very many.
